How to compress a recorded lecture in a laptop/desktop before uploading in the NLP library?

Things to keep in mind when dealing with videos, live lecture, etc.

  1. FPS (Frames per second): In the simplest form, a video can be considered similar to a sequence of frames, like in the old film rolls in cinema halls. The more frames you have per second, the larger the file size. Anything above 20FPS is good.
  2. Resolution (Length x Height) is important when you capture writing on whiteboard etc. Keep height above 360.
  3. Sound – Normally phones capture high-quality stereo sound. For our purposes, mono (single channel) at 30kHz is sufficient.
  4. Data rate or Bit-Rate. The file size is ultimately decided by bit-rate. Keeping this around 600kbps (kilobits per second) is recommended.  1hr video will be 270MB at this bitrate. If you want a much smaller file size, it’s better to reduce FPS (video will not be smooth, but your whiteboard should be readable).

If the file size is too big, you can compress the recorded live lecture to reduce the size. The file size is determined by bitrate. Usually, 600 kbps (kilobytes per second) is recommended as the ideal size of the file.

Follow the below steps to compress a recorded lecture which is too big in a laptop/desktop before uploading in the NLP library.

  1. Download VLC media player from
  2. Open VLC and click on Media and select “Convert/Save”.

  3. Add the file to be compressed and click on “Convert/Save”.

  4. Click on “Create a new profile”.

  5. Profile creation
    1. Select “MP4/MOV” under Encapsulation segment.
    2. Select “Video” checkbox under Video Codec segment and select “Codec” as H-264, “Bitrate” as 600kb/s(minimum recommended rate).
    3. Select “Audio” and “Keep original audio track” checkboxes under Audio Codec segment and click on “Create”.

  6. Select the newly created profile(The saved profile can be used later for other videos). Select the Destination folder and give the compressed file a new name. Then click on “Start”.
  7. Once compression is done the video would be downloaded in the Destination folder selected. This compressed video can be uploaded to the library in the NLP Website.
